JAM JAH's - Product of Jamaica

This is my packaging for jams that came from Jamaica, branded "JAM JAH". The corrugate card is supposed to look like rusty corrugated metal that you can find on a Jamaican beach hut or shanty house. The card was  painted so that when the jars were stood together they would look like the rastafarian flag.

Lesson (No.1) - The Idea

"I have two goals. The first is that everything must have an idea; it cannot just look good.
The second is that it has to look good.
With out visual beauty even a good idea will not pass.
Graphic design requires both ingredients but the first priority is the idea."

Type as Image

I was assigned the letter "U". I had to find a word that began with that letter and turn it into a simple idea. I used the word "unattached". The project was about economy and less is more.

Restricted to typefaces, letters, numbers, punctuation and other characters out of my type specimen book.

1st Week Introduction Brief - KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON

My first term is all  hand rendering, which seemed a bit daunting to me as i like to sleep snuggled up with my macbook and due to not being the handiest person with scissors and glue, but computers where banned for the full first 12 weeks. But it's to teach the principles of design and make me think hard and consider the affects of my decisions.

A week before I was to start University a letter had arrived for me in which contained the famous WW2 poster: "KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON"

This was an example of how we where to produce A3 poster that would be strictly typographic and would consist of a message that could be used to inspire and motivate you to keep calm and carry on when times are hard; and as I was a first year, I wasn't allowed to use a computer and it had to be entirely hand rendered.

This is what I came up with:

The statement is originally coined from Audrey Hepburn:
Nothing is impossible, the word itself says "I'm possible"
I used some grey mount board and sprayed it black with some Volvo car paint and then made the stencil and sprayed over in white. Tada

It then came to my first day at university and my whole tutor was ushered in to the studio next door that belonged to the 2nd and 3rd year graphic design students where we sat band in the middle of. Our work was then laid out on to the desks and each year took there turn to look at them and then vote on there year groups work. To cut the chase after a few rounds of voting, some how my poster managed to come joint 2nd out of all three years. My success was short lived when i was to stand up in front of everyone and asked the question what type face was it that I had used; to which I replied i don't know.

I do know now of course: Myriad Pro. Probably not the best type face to use.
However, we where told that the posters would be made into little A5 post cards and would be sent off to SCAT's contacts with some sort of recognition on it. Bonus! I'll keep you up to date when the postcards come about.
